An individual named John Anari claimed that he is an ambassador of ULMWP to the United Nations. The organization has been known as an NGO based in London, UK, campaigning the separation of West Papua region from Indonesia.
He talks to communities and organizations, spreading words that West Papua is under colonization. Recently, 25/9, Anari talked at Queens College, New York, USA, about the struggle for the freedom of West Papua.
But instead of gaining sympathy and appreciation, Anari was successful to entertain several college students who came to the event and became a laughing stock by the participants of the discussion. People seem to have understood that the UN is not a place for such representatives of NGOs, but for those of sovereign countries across the globe.
The participants looked to the understanding that the spirit of West Papuan freedom is the free of its people from the social disasters of today’s world like poverty, illiteracy, illness outbreaks, and the lack of supporting infrastructure like schools and health centers.
For your information, in order to become an ambassador to the United Nations, there are a couple of basic, yet important conditions to be fulfilled:
1. Someone has to represent a sovereign country or recognized international organizations (goodwill ambassadors)
2. In order to become an ambassador accredited to UN Office, someone has to present his/her letters of credence (credentials) to UN Secretary General formally.
John Anari’s ambassadorial claim is basically a fabricated stance as it fails to fulfill both diplomatic basic principles that are internationally recognized, especially by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, notably Articles 1, 2, 3, and 8.
However, it is fun to hear the joke that John Anari is trying to make. Instead of rising people’s awareness of the real problem in West Papua and Indonesia in general, he is trying to gain personal fame by making some comedy.
There is no need to sue this man for tarnishing the good name of the United Nations by pretending to be an ambassador associated to the UN Office. In other words, no need to take this man seriously. He does not even want to recognize his real name Yohanis Anari, taking John as a stage name. He is just trying to make fun of himself, and unfortunately, at the same time, degrading the soul of free West Papua movement.t. (*)
